BUDGET FAILS BY 340 VOTES; “BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD”

The budget has been rejected, triggering a second referendum three weeks from Tuesday.
Some 31.8%, or 4,091 out of 12,858 voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s budget referendum. The unofficial tally put the ‘no’ votes ahead by 340 Tuesday night.
Bytown charger, the next budget second budget referendum is three weeks from Tuesday on Tuesday, April 23. If the budget fails again, votes are held every other week.
“Back to the drawing board,” First Selectman Steve Vavrek said after hearing the results. “We had a lot of support with the parents, just not enough.”
He added, “The first thing I’ve got to do is listen to the elected officials,” he said.
The charter calls for a joint meeting of the Board of Education, the Board of Finance and Town Council to discuss the budget, and ultimately the first selectman decides what goes to voters in three weeks.
Here are unofficial results with absentee ballots included:
- District 1, Fawn Hollow: 664 yes to 668 no;
- District 2, Stepney results: 298 yes, 319 no;
- District 3, Monroe El, 315 yes, 462 no;
- District 4, Masuk High School, 595 yes, 754 no.
